Internships have never been so sought after, discussed, analysed and misunderstood. Be they paid or unpaid, part of a study away or study abroad experience or closer to home, students around the globe now see work experience as an essential component of their education. As a result they and their parents expect and demand that universities and colleges have opportunities for experiential education as part of their academic agenda. Furthermore, employers expect that graduating job seekers have such experiences on their resumes.

The word internship itself was a mainly North American expression but in the last decade, the rest of the world, some countries with a long history of work experience and some with none, have adopted this word to describe the practice of young people exploring the workplace as part of their further education.

The 2012 Global Internship Conference will bring together all of the parties that are involved in this growing field. From the educators and third party providers who run courses at home and abroad, to the governments who decide how to legislate in areas of employment and immigration, from the companies and organizations who offer opportunities and to the students who take them, this conference will involve them all.

This annual Conference will examine continuously all aspects of the internship. It will analyse and debate best practices and the changing priorities of a technological world. It will explore the current debates such as paid and unpaid placements, academic credit and the role of company recruiters. It will seek clarity from legislators and will request from and give advice to the professional organizations, the companies large and small, the charities and schools that make these valuable experiences available. Most importantly we shall ask the students, whose careers can be so influenced, to help steer the future of this vital part of their education.
