Nicanor Parra has been awarded the Spanish Literature Prize Miguel de Cervantes 2011. The Jury’s final verdict has been announced by the Ministress of Culture, Mrs. Ángeles González-Sinde, during an event organised in the Ministry of Culture.
The jury was made up by Margarita Salas, designed President of the Jury by the Royal Spanish Academy ; Gerardo Piña-Rosales, by the North Anerican Academy of Spanish; José Mª Micó Juan, by the Spanish University Deans Conference (CRUE); Olvido García Valdés, by the Instituto Cervantes; Rosa Regás, by the Ministress of Culture; Francisco Giménez Alemán, by the Spanish Federation of Journalists Associations (FAPE); Marta Rojas, by the Latin American Federation of Journalism (FELAP); Ruth Viviana Fine, by the International Hispanist Association. Acting as a Secretary the General Manager of Books, Archives and Libraries, Rogelio Blanco and as a Secretary too, Mónica Fernández, Deputy Director in charge of Book, Voluntary Reading and Spanish Literature Promotion.
Nicanor Parra Sandoval (San Fabián de Alico, Chile, 1914). A poet , a story-teller and an essay-writer, has a major degree in Maths & Physics by the Universidad de Chile. His major contribution to Literature has been creating the Anti-Poetry.
NP starts writing in his early years, having his first book Cancionero sin nombre publishd in 1937 . He then little by little started creating what he himself would be referring to as anti-poetry, which basically meant incorporating normal, daily language – or using a more informal register – to traditional poetry. The most surprising sample is known Poemas y antipoemas (1954).
He received the National Chilean Literatura Prize twice (1969 and 1981), and the International Award Juan Rulfo. His work has been translated to many languages and he is a member of the Chilean Academy of Literature and the Gabriela Mistral Foundation.
