Each year, thousands of revellers see in the New Year at the Brandenburg Gate. Silvester, as it is known in Germany, is celebrated with spectacular midnight fireworks, plenty of champagne-fuelled capers, and live music performances to entertain the masses.
As the major feature which physically and symbolically marked the separation between East and West, the gate has been a focal point for New Year celebrations since the early 1990s. Five million people welcomed the new millennium in this area of Berlin.
Clowns, musketeers, prisoners and devils take to the streets of Berlin exactly 12 hours before the year ends for the annual Berlin New Year’s Eve Run. It begins and ends opposite the Mommsenstadion.
As in previous years, around 2500 runners are expected to brave either the 9.9km, 6.3km, 4km or 2km runs, start times of which are staggered between 12pm and 1pm.
Don’t worry if all the Christmas feasting made you slightly sluggish – the coveted trophy goes not to the fastest runner, but the best costume.
