MADRID: Just 60 % of the Spaniards read

According to the figures exposed in the Reading Habits and Book Purchasing Research as of 2010 – Barómetro de Hábitos de Lectura y Compra de Libros en 2010 – carried out by the Spanish Federation of Publishers – FGEE, Federación de Gremios de Editores en España:

  •  57%  of the population older than 14 read in their spare time, whilst 21,5% declared reading for work and/or study reasons.
  • The rate of spare time readers increased 2 percentage points regarding the 2009 rate, till reaching  43,7% of the population. Compared to 2001, this rate increased up to 7.7 points.
  • The average reader profile in Spain kept being young, urban, graduated woman who likes Spanish fiction for amusement.
  • 5,3% of the population read electronically, but only 1,0% did it by e-Reader.
  • More than half of the readers’s bulk – 57% – belonged to seven major Spanish Regions (i.e. communities of Madrid, The Basque Country, La Rioja, Cantabria, Catalonia, Aragón and Navarra).
  • On a quarterly basis, 100% of the whole population aged between 10 and 13 read books at least once.
  •  61,1% of the readers acquired Fiction, be it History, Adventure or Action.
  • The most successful books in 2010 were:  ”Los pilares de la tierra” -The Pillars of the Earth- by Ken Follet, the most read and “El tiempo entre costuras”, by María Dueñas, the best-sold.
