For one night each year, over 1,000 museums throughout France take part in this event which allows visitors access to museums free of charge from sunset to approximately 1 am in the morning. This year the event will take place on Sunday, 15th May 2010. The event aims to allow wider access to the many treasures housed within the country’s great collections. Many venues put on special programmes to welcome new visitors.
The Nuit des Musées is an initiative launched by the French Department of Culture in 2005. Participating museums are announced in the run-up to the day, but it is almost certain that there will be a free museum in your vicinity. Enjoy light shows, musical and theatrical performances, unique and ephemeral contemporay art shows in a nocturnal dialogue with the museums’ permanent exhibitions!
